How to find a job in China as a foreigner in 2025
The Chinese job market for positions in the tech sector became even more fierce in 2025. However, if you are willing to put in the work and adjust expectations you still have a chance to find a suitable position.
In the beginning of 2024 I wrote about tactics of finding a job in China as well as options you have on the Chinese job market. The information found in those articles is still valid. What changed though is the economic situation which became even more fierce than in 2023 and the beginning of 2024.
Companies in and outside of Shanghai started and continued their layoffs, they even close sites entirely. To mention a few recent examples: Citigroup (3500 people in China), IBM (1000 people in Shanghai), Autodesk (1350 people worldwide, Shanghai affected), Amazon AI Lab (Shanghai), Microsoft (700 people in Shanghai and Wuxi), Microsoft AI Lab (Shanghai).
In the beginning of 2025 I was forced to find a new job myself. With the experiences I made during that time and the exchange I had with several people on that topic, it is time for an update.
